The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco

The Heart Forger
(The Bone Witch #2)
Author: Rin Chupeco
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Release Date: March 20, 2018
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

In The Bone Witch, Tea mastered resurrection―now she's after revenge...

No one knows death like Tea. A bone witch who can resurrect the dead, she has the power to take life...and return it. And she is done with her self-imposed exile. Her heart is set on vengeance, and she now possesses all she needs to command the mighty daeva. With the help of these terrifying beasts, she can finally enact revenge against the royals who wronged her―and took the life of her one true love.

But there are those who plot against her, those who would use Tea's dark power for their own nefarious ends. Because you can't kill someone who can never die...

War is brewing among the kingdoms, and when dark magic is at play, no one is safe.

The Heart Forger continues the story of The Bone Witch in it’s interesting way of weaving past and present together. With the interesting characters that always sit on the line of good or bad.

So I love Rin Chupeco’s characters. They are always so interesting. Tea in particular, she is one of those characters that is deeply flawed. She has both light and dark in her and you are not always sure which one is on the surface. I love Tea because she is very open about who she is and fearful of what she has the potential to become. She is also willing to take risk to protect the people she cares about. Despite the fact that her brother is her familiar, she just wants him to happy. In the past we see her as young and just finding her way, in the present we see this very determined woman. She is ready to do what she thinks is right and not let anyone sway her. You start to see more and more of the Tea from before as she tells her story though. Oh the Azi! I love her connection and her discoveries concerning the Daeva.

So there is more love story in this book and I loved it. It also made me sad because you know there is something coming around the bend. We have both Fox’s love story and Tea’s love story. Both are very sweet and fun to read.

Again I love the characters. From the handful of Asha we spend our time with, the Princess Inessa, Khalad the heartforger, Kance the Prince, Kalen the Deathseeker and of course Fox the familiar. Of course there is also the leaders of the Faceless as well. We get a little more insight into them too. I really like everyone and what they bring to the story.

So the book is told from Tea’s past point of view and the Bard’s present point of view. So it’s kind of interesting that we don’t have Tea’s actually feelings in the present. We are still left with questions that will be answered in the next book, I hope. It’s interesting to see as the past starts catching up to the present of Tea’s story. I can never decide how I feel about the length of the book. I’m never not interested in it. Sometimes I have to take breaks but I think it’s because there is a lot to devour and process.

I really enjoyed The Heart Forger. I’m looking forward to seeing the end of Tea’s story. To the end of all the characters stories. I have a feeling the next book will be sad but I also think it will be happy. Ha ha which is hard to explain but I think Tea will find the ending she wants because she is just that kind of girl. Nobody is going to stop her.

Despite uncanny resemblances to Japanese revenants, Rin Chupeco has always maintained her sense of hummus Raised in Manila, Philippines, she keeps four pets: a dog, two birds, and a husband. She’s been a technical writer and travel blogger, but now makes things up for a living. The Girl from the Well was her debut novel.

Brett is another sexy romance you expect from Melissa Foster.

When I first started reading I actually didn’t like Brett! I’m like, really, this is how he sees women. You soon realize that he is kind of all talk, well maybe not all talk. When it comes to Sophie though we quickly see him change. There is a super cute moment at the beginning where he just keeps showing up where she is and he seems kind of awkward. It’s really cute. So as much as he is the bad boy you would expect he also has a lot going on in his brain. The more you find about him and his sister. The more you can’t help but realize he’s not all bad.

I loved Sophie. She knows what she wants, she came to the city from a small town but she is happy. She loves it. She is not some timid farm girl in the city. She owns it. I love her confidence, her happiness with her career and her strong friendship with her bestie. I like how she is not afraid to tell Brett right off the bat what she wants and isn’t just going to sit around hoping he does it. She is also very compassionate and is able to see past facades.

This was enjoyable romance with all the things you look for when you are trying to take a mental break from the world.

10 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Becoming An Author

I get asked this question often enough that, when I saw Jen suggested it as a topic for this blog post, I was like, um, yes, that one. Because asking what I wish I’d known before becoming an author is like asking what I wish I’d known before getting married or becoming a mom or just about anything else.

The answer is “almost EVERYTHING.”

Not because if I’d known, I would’ve done things much differently, but because I would’ve given myself a lot more grace. So perhaps in reading this, you’ll maybe give a nod or two and suddenly find yourself extending your heart a bit more grace too. <3 span="">

For instance, I wish I’d known:

1) That I would spend more time writing on my bed than sleeping in it. Meaning, this career is hard work, but it’s also beautiful.

2) That every time I reach page 80 on every single one of my books, I realize the book is horrible and then have to go back and rework the storyline. This is normal and it’s actually not horrible. This is just part of your process.

3) I wish I’d known that there are far more people who are kind than those who like to criticize. Press into the good ones – they will be your sanity on the days when the others make you feel like giving up.
4) Also, Cheetos are a totally legitimate form of sustenance when you’re on deadline.

5) I wish I’d known to take mental snapshots of even the moments that seem mundane. Because they never are.

6) Ignore the rules about success. Just walk in such a way that at the end of each day, each month, each year, you can look back and say you lived life well. THAT is true success.

7) The kind hearts of readers will be one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever been honored to experience.

8) Your family and relationships will support you more than you can ever imagine. But also, they are the things in life that will last forever. A career does not. Invest in them. Invest in eternity.

9) Learn to write on airplanes. It will be a saving grace.

10) It’s okay to not be perfect.
And really – what is perfection anyway?

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

Title: To Kill a Kingdom
Author: Alexandra Christo
Published: March 6th 2018 by Feiwel & Friends
Buy: Goodreads : Amazon : B&N : BD

Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most—a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen or remain a human forever.

The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby—it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good—But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?
To Kill a Kingdom is such a great retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. As well as keeping a little of the Ariel and Ursula influence. I loved this story and the way it was reimagined!!

My favorite love stories are always the ones filled with sarcastic and witty banter between the two love interest. I think Lira and Elian have this down pat. They go from despising each other, to friends and even confidants. I loved the way their interactions paly out all the way through. Even when trust is something that really has to be tested. Neither of them have bright and sunny past but they both can see each other for what is in front of them. I loved the way they come together.

Also it’s always great to have dual POVs. Especially when you are dealing with both an Ocean and Land kingdom. Having the two perspectives of a war that has waged for centuries, is really insightful and adds depth to the story. You are like oh I can see where they are coming from, oh I can see where they coming from too. Plus I thought they were well down and definitely sounded like two different characters.

The supporting characters fill their roles well. Kahlia who is Lira’s cousin and Elian and his crew of pirates. Of course Sakura and the kingdom of ice. We got bits of the other kingdoms but not so much information where you felt overloaded.

Again I loved the little nods to the other versions of The Little Mermaid. The sea foam and taking of a princes heart. Lira’s fiery red hair and the Sea Queens tentacles. It’s my favorite way for a retelling to be done, keeping little elements but making the story it’s own.

I really loved this book and especially the characters. A great reimagining of a classic story!

Spies, Lies, and Allies: A Love Story Cover Reveal

Let us know what you think of the cover for Spies, Lies, and Allies: A Love Story by Lisa Brown Roberts, which releases May 1, 2018!

This cover reveal is brought to you by Entangled Teen.

About Spies, Lies, and Allies: A Love Story:

Summers are supposed to be fun, right? Not mine. I've got a job at my dad's company, which is sponsoring a college scholarship competition. I just found out that, in addition to my job assisting the competing interns, I'm supposed to vote for the winner. Totally not what I signed up for.

There's a crazy guy running the competition like it's an episode of Survivor. Then there’s Carlos, who is, well, very distracting –– in a good way. But I can't even think about him that way because Crazy Guy says any fraternizing on the job means instant disqualification for the intern involved.

As if that's not enough, an anonymous weirdo with insider intel is trying to sabotage my dad's company on social media...and I'm afraid it's working.

Much as I'd love to quit, I can't. Kristoffs Never Quit is our family motto. I just hope there's more than one survivor by the end of this summer.
